Beat the summer itch! Learn about jock itch, its common locations, and easy tips for prevention with hygiene, clothing choices, and post-exercise care.
Jock itch is a common problem that many people experience, especially during the summer. This occurs due to increased sweating and higher humidity levels. These factors create a favorable environment for fungal growth, leading to jock itch.
From the most common places where jock itch develop:
- Between the folds of the groin
- The groin
- The perineum (the area between the genitals and anus)
- Under the scrotum
- In the inner thighs
- In all the folds that are considered “warm and humid”
We present to you a set of tips to prevent or limit the development of jock itch:
- Pay attention to groin hygiene, especially if you are used to excessive sweating in that area.
- During the summer, avoid wearing closed underwear.
- Be sure to wear loose-fitting cotton underwear and, accordingly, wear loose cotton clothing (that does not stick to the body).
- Wash – daily – the areas where fungi are likely to grow with water and antibacterial soap, then dry them well with a soft towel. Pay special attention to the area between the folds of the groin and the perineum.
- When going to public baths or swimming pools, it is possible to get a mild infection, in order to prevent infection with jock itch.
- Be sure to dry your body well with your own personal towels that other family members do not use.
- During the summer, avoid wearing “nylon” underwear.
- After exercising, it is preferable to wear tight-fitting pants (preferably made of cotton) to prevent friction of the legs against each other.
