Even Doctors Are Reaching for Supplements: What’s the Buzz?

A recent study reveals that a significant number of U.S. doctors incorporate dietary supplements into their daily routines, and many recommend them to patients as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Do you take dietary supplements? Good for you! A recent study showed that doctors do too.

According to the study, which surveyed over 1,177 physicians online, 72% of practicing physicians and around 89% of patients in the United States take dietary supplements as part of their daily routine.

The study was published last month by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), and it included 900 physicians and 277 patients. The study’s findings shed light on the beliefs of physicians and patients regarding dietary supplement use.

Study Results

The study’s results indicate that the percentage of physicians and patients who take dietary supplements is higher than the percentage of those who take supplements to support bone health, which came in at around 68%.

In addition, the survey conducted among physicians in the United States indicated that 28% of doctors recommend using dietary supplements as part of the treatment for various health issues.

“The findings reinforce what has been known from previous statistics,” says Judy Blatman, senior vice president of the Council for Responsible Nutrition in the United States. According to her, taking dietary supplements is part of a healthy lifestyle, like exercise and following a balanced diet.

Dr. Alex, head of the Center for Responsible Nutrition at the Grocery Manufacturers Association, says that in the survey conducted, it appears that about a third of the general public or more use dietary supplements, and about 50% of them turn to a family doctor for information on this topic.

“It is no longer uncommon for doctors to use dietary supplements, but naturally, it is among the topics based on which their opinions – the presidents of major scientific organizations – are divided due to differing views in this field.”

“We at the Center for Responsible Nutrition are constantly working on preparing training programs specifically for family doctors who aim to increase their knowledge.”
